Ponzi

Ponzi

An online game based on the illegal pyramid scheme concocted by the infamous Charles Ponzi during the 1920s?

“Why not?” thought Ideator Dave Cutler, a designer, illustrator, and inventor by trade. It seemed like a fun way to pass the time, and it might even make him a few honest dollars.

“I wanted to come up with a fun and social online game that would have a bit of an edge to it,” said Cutler. “The stories behind Ponzi and other pyramid schemes have always fascinated me, and I thought a game with complete transparency that involved very little money could be fun to play.”

The result is PONZI, an app based on the legendary Ponzi scheme, with one important difference – everyone knows it’s a Ponzi scheme, which changes the strategy and makes the game more challenging. The game can be played on a mobile phone, tablet, or desktop PC. And since it doesn’t cost anything to play, nobody loses any real money.

Where Are They Now: Penguin App

In 2015, one of the first ideas Ideator showcased on our blog was the Penguin App, a social networking app that allows people to connect based on their mutual interests rather than just physical appearance. At the time, the app was still in the developmental stage, but we are proud to announce that Ideators Sidao Li, Phillip Duong and Andres Santana have come a long way since then – including submitting their product for acceptance to the Apple App Store.

Admit Hero

Admit Hero

It’s amazing what a little targeted research can do.

When looking to develop a new app for high school students, Ideator Faique Moqeet originally thought his target audience might value an organizational tool to help track their academic and extracurricular achievements. But after a 5-week pilot program, he discovered they preferred to have access to content from people who had achieved ambitious goals, and a place to find opportunities relevant to their interests. Based on this feedback, Admit Hero was born.

Lessons Learned from USASBE 2016

Entrepreneurship can sometimes seem like a haphazard process, especially if you’re attempting it for the first time. But the Ideator team recently attended (and sponsored) a fabulous conference where we learned that it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, we learned that entrepreneurship can be taught, and that a very impressive professional organization is working hard to develop new methods of teaching it more effectively.

Onto New Things

I am truly excited and passionate to become the CEO of Ideator. It’s been a career-long dream to make this happen.

I came up with the idea for Ideator back in 2008. I had recently moved from San Francisco to
Los Angeles and the venture idea started from hanging out with my good friend Aber Whitcomb. Aber was the CTO and Co-Founder of MySpace. The MySpace social events were pretty wild. Since MySpace’s HQ was in L.A., their events attracted not only serial entrepreneurs but also lots of Hollywood actors, actresses, musicians and lots of famous people. I would watch Aber get repeatedly approached by people who would say, “Hey – I have a great idea, I would love to chat with you about it.” At the time, I realized there was not an easily accessible place to get help with an idea and start a business.
